Let's quickly review what LASIK entails...

How LASIK Works

LASIK eye surgery improves vision by reshaping the cornea, correcting the refractive errors that lead to hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. The LASIK procedure first involves the creation of a corneal flap. Once the outer layer of the cornea is folded back, Dr. Montgomery will use an excimer laser to modify the internal cornea tissue and correct your vision.

LASIK Technology Glossary

Femtosecond Laser

Femtosecond lasers are used by ophthalmologists like Dr. Montgomery to create corneal flaps during LASIK. Femtosecond lasers get their name from the fact that they emit pulses of laser energy that last for only femtoseconds (a femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second).

Excimer Laser

Excimer lasers are the lasers that ophthalmologists use to reshape corneal tissue during LASIK. Excimer lasers emit ultraviolet radiation, which causes the corneal tissue to vaporize into the air. This means that excimer lasers can precisely modify the cornea without harming the remaining tissue.

Examination and Planning

Before you can be cleared for laser vision correction, Dr. Montgomery must complete an examination at one of our eye care offices in Northglenn or Westminster. During this consultation, he will analyze the shape of your eye and measure your refractive errors with revolutionary Pentacam® technology.

Corneal Flap

On the day of your laser eye surgery, Dr. Montgomery will begin the procedure by creating a corneal flap. While other eye care practices still use blades to create flaps, Dr. Montgomery uses the industry-leading Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser. He will then fold the ultra-thin flap back to reveal the interior corneal tissue.

Vision Correction

After folding back the flap, Dr. Montgomery will use the Alcon® WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser to precisely modify the cornea. The machine identifies the ideal shape for your cornea and creates that shape in a matter of seconds.

Now for a deeper dive into our favorite LASIK technologies...

Pentacam

The Pentacam suite of imaging technologies has been described as "the Gold Standard" in ocular screening. Pentacam machines are like MRI machines for your eyes. They are completely safe, contactless, and painless. Plus, it only takes a few seconds for Dr. Montgomery to use the system to take measurements of your eyes. For LASIK patients, in particular, Pentacam offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Pentacam allows Dr. Montgomery to examine an incredibly detailed scan of your corneal structure, so he can easily diagnose your refractive error and determine if laser vision correction is right for you.
  • The Pentacam software provides Dr. Montgomery with all the information he needs to plan every detail of your LASIK procedure.

Ziemer LDV Femtosecond Laser

Laser eye surgery

The FEMTO LDV Z from Ziemer releases energy pulses at a higher rate than any other femtosecond laser on the market. Dr. Montgomery uses this groundbreaking technology to create the corneal flap during LASIK surgery. Here are just a few of the many ways that patients benefit from the use of this laser:

  • The FEMTO LDV Z allows Dr. Montgomery to create a corneal flap with a wider diameter than is typical for LASIK surgery. This improves his ability to correct your refractive error and results in better vision, especially night vision.
  • Because this femtosecond laser emits energy at such a high frequency, the flap creation only takes a few seconds, and the flap can be made thinner and smoother than ever before.

Alcon WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser

The Alcon WaveLight EX500 excimer laser has led the field in laser vision correction for close to a decade. Dr. Montgomery is proud that his eye care centers in Northglenn and Westminster feature this advanced equipment because it allows him to perform LASIK procedures that are as fast and accurate as possible. Benefits of the Alcon WaveLight EX500 include:

  • The machine takes your unique refractive error into account, allowing Dr. Montgomery to accurately treat most degrees of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
  • The EX500 emits 500 laser pulses a second, so LASIK can be faster than it's ever been.
  • The technology includes an effective eye-tracking system, so the laser will target the appropriate areas of your cornea even if your eye was to move unexpectedly.
