Eliminate Chronic Dry Eye through Customized Treatment

As one of the more common eye disorders, chronic dry eye (CDE) can range from mild to severe symptoms and be attributed to many different factors, such as aging, medication, and eyelid malfunction. Dr. Montgomery can help you address the root cause of your chronic dry eye with a detailed consultation and personalized chronic dry eye treatment plan at our Northglenn, CO, practice. At Montgomery Eye Care, we are committed to excellence and providing our patients with the best possible care.

What is Chronic Dry Eye?

Chronic dry eye is a common eye condition where the eye does not produce enough tears or has a malfunctioning tear duct that prevents eye lubrication. If left untreated, this eye condition can lead to permanent vision problems, such as pain, ulcers, and loss of vision.

The cause of your chronic dry eye may be natural, related to a medical condition, or the side effect of a medication you are taking.

Although commonly seen in older patients, CDE can also be caused by diet, environmental factors, medications, and certain medical conditions, such as:

  • Menopause
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Thyroid disease
  • Lupus
  • Sjogren’s syndrome
  • Blepharitis
  • Eyelid disorders (entropion and ectropion)

Signs and Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have chronic dry eye:

  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Chronic scratchy eyes or the feeling of something inside your eyes
  • Red or irritated eyes
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sensitivity to light

Treatment Options Available

During your consultation with Dr. Montgomery, he will determine the right course of treatment for you through a detailed exam. In order to determine the root cause, he will administer a series of tests and ask questions about your lifestyle, medications, and diet.

The cause of your chronic dry eye may be natural, related to a medical condition, or the side effect of a medication you are taking. Before resorting to surgery, Dr. Montgomery will first work with your family physician to manage and adjust your medications, such as sleeping pills, birth control pills, antidepressants, or decongestants that may be contributing to your dry eyes.

Other lifestyle changes may include an increase in water intake, diet changes, using a humidifier, and wearing sunglasses when outside. We may ask that you stop smoking and avoid wearing contact lenses for a period of time.

For more complex cases, Dr. Montgomery may also recommend:

  • Eye drops: Over-the-counter artificial tears or medicated eye drops can be used to keep eyes lubricated and increase tear production.
  • Tear conservation: Dr. Montgomery can conserve tears by permanently plugging the tear ducts through laser cauterization or inserting punctal plugs. For a temporary solution, he can use punctal plugs made from collagen that dissolve over time.
  • Prescription medications: Certain medications can minimize eye inflammation and increase tear production to help lubricate the eye.
  • Eyelid surgery: If eyelid malfunction is contributing to your dry eyes, Dr. Montgomery may recommend eyelid surgery to treat entropion or ectropion.
