How the TECNIS Multifocal Lens Works
All types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) improve patient vision by replacing the crystalline lens, which is the convex disc of tissue that lies behind the iris. Eventually, cataracts will reach a point at which the sufferer can no longer focus. The result is much like trying to see through a dirty window. An IOL replaces the clouded lens to allow light to enter the eye unobstructed, resulting in improved focus. While a monofocal lens can restore focus at one distance, the TECNIS IOL restores focus at all distances. Although some patients may still require glasses for some functions, they can expect to need their glasses far less often.
During a safe, comfortable in-office laser surgery procedure, Dr. Montgomery will place the TECNIS IOL. An extremely small incision is created in the cornea, granting access to the crystalline lens. A laser breaks the natural lens into pieces that are gently suctioned out. Next, the TECNIS is inserted through the incision. The incision is so small that sutures are not required following surgery.
An adjustment period can be expected as you become used to focusing with your IOL.
Although some patients may still require glasses for some functions, they can expect to need their glasses far less often after receiving the TECNIS IOL.
